How rack size is measured
Rack space is counted in rack units. One U is 1.75 inches, or 44.45 mm, of vertical mounting height. A 9U rack therefore gives you nine of those slots, and every piece of equipment you mount is rated in the same unit.
The mounting width is a 19-inch standard across essentially all network equipment, so the number that actually varies between racks is height and depth. Depth is the measurement people most often get wrong.

Working out the size you need
Add up the U height of everything going in, then add a cable manager between each pair of patch panels and switches — skipping those is the single most common cause of a rack that becomes unworkable within a year. Then add 30 to 40 per cent for growth.
A typical 24-outlet office comes to around 8U: one patch panel, one switch, two cable managers, an NVR and a UPS. A 9U wall-mount rack fits that with a little room to spare, which is why 9U is the size we supply most often.
Beyond roughly 15U, wall mounting stops being sensible — the load and the depth push you toward a floor-standing cabinet.
Depth matters more than people expect
Wall-mount racks are commonly 400, 450, 500 or 600 mm deep. Switches and patch panels are shallow and fit anything, but an NVR, a server or a UPS may need 500 mm or more once you allow for power cables and bend radius behind the equipment.
Measure the deepest device you plan to mount, add roughly 100 mm for cabling behind it, and choose the rack depth from that number rather than from the front-panel dimensions.
Power, heat and cable management
A PDU gives you controlled, individually accessible outlets inside the rack instead of a power strip resting on the floor of the cabinet. Our 6-socket PDU covers a typical wall-mount rack.
Heat is the other consideration. A closed cabinet with a switch, an NVR and a UPS inside will run warm; a fan unit and clear airflow in front of and behind the equipment are worth planning for at the start.
Horizontal cable managers between panels keep patch cords at the correct bend radius and make later moves and changes possible without disturbing live links.
