A network cable installation is judged twice: once when it certifies, and again two years later when someone has to trace a fault at short notice. Most of what separates a good install from a bad one costs nothing extra at the time — it is discipline, not budget.
Specify one category end to end
A cabling channel performs at the level of its weakest component. Cat6 cable terminated into Cat5e jacks gives you a Cat5e channel — you have paid for the upgrade and received none of it.
If you specify a category, specify it across every part:
- Cat6 UTP cable for the permanent link
- Information outlets of matching category — our CommScope and D-Link jacks
- Patch panels and RJ45 hardware at the same rating
- Factory-terminated patch cords rather than field-made ones
Field-terminated patch cords are among the most common reasons a link fails certification. Factory cords are tested at manufacture and take that variable out entirely.
Solid for permanent links, stranded for cords
Solid conductor cable belongs in walls, ceilings and conduit, running from the rack to the outlet. Stranded conductor belongs in patch cords, where the cable is flexed repeatedly.
Using stranded for a permanent link, or solid for a patch cord, costs performance and reliability. It is an easy mistake to make when ordering in a hurry and an expensive one to correct afterwards.
The two numbers that decide certification
Untwist under 13 mm
The twist in each pair is what rejects interference. Every millimetre you untwist at the termination degrades that. Keep the untwisted length under 13 mm at jacks and panels — strip only as much jacket as the termination actually needs.
Bend radius
Exceed the cable's bend radius and you change its geometry permanently. This most often happens where cable enters a rack, or where it is pulled tight around a corner behind furniture. Once crushed, the link may still pass a basic continuity test and fail certification.
Respect the 90 metre limit
The permanent link is limited to 90 metres, with 100 metres of channel once patch cords are added at each end. That is cable length, not straight-line distance — routing through ceilings, down risers and around obstructions adds up faster than a floor plan suggests.
Where a run will not fit inside that limit, the answer is a fiber link with a media converter, or an intermediate switch closer to the outlets, not a longer copper cable. Our fiber optic and OFC range covers the first option.
Rack discipline
Put a horizontal cable manager between each patch panel and its switch. Skipping them is the single most common reason a rack becomes unworkable: patch cords bend past their radius, cords from different panels tangle, and tracing one link means disturbing thirty others.
- Use the shortest patch cord that reaches — 1 m and 2 m cover most rack runs

Label both ends, at the time
Every link gets a label at the outlet and the matching label at the panel, applied as it is terminated rather than afterwards from memory. Record the scheme somewhere that outlives the installer.
This is the practice most often deferred and most regretted. An unlabelled rack turns every future change into an exercise in tracing cables by hand.
Plan for PoE heat
PoE current generates heat in the conductor, and heat accumulates when cables are bundled tightly in a tray or conduit. Thin, low-grade cable increases both voltage drop and heat.
Where the installation feeds IP cameras, wireless access points or VoIP phones, quality cable with a full-size conductor is what keeps the link stable at distance. Check the switch's total PoE budget as well as its per-port rating — see our network switches range.
Test and keep the results
Certify every link and keep the reports. They are your evidence that the installation met specification, and the baseline against which a future fault can be compared. A link that certified at handover and fails now tells you something specific changed.
