Fiber Optic or Copper Cable: Which Suits Your Network Best

Distance, interference, cost and terminations compared — and why most buildings end up using both rather than choosing one.

This is rarely an either-or decision in practice. Most buildings we supply run fiber on the backbone and copper to the desk, because each is clearly better at a different job. The useful question is not which is superior but where the boundary between them falls in your building.

The distance limit settles most cases

Copper Ethernet stops at 90 metres of permanent link, 100 metres of channel once patch cords are added. That is cable length along the actual route, not straight-line distance — through ceilings, down risers and around obstructions, a 60-metre floor plan becomes a 95-metre pull more often than people expect.

Multimode fiber carries hundreds of metres, single-mode kilometres. If a run cannot fit inside 90 metres, the decision is already made.

Where copper wins

  • Cost per link — cable, jacks and patch panels are all cheaper
  • Termination — a trained installer terminates copper with hand tools; fiber needs a splicing machine or pre-terminated assemblies
  • PoE — copper carries power to cameras, access points and phones on the same cable. Fiber cannot
  • Fault-finding — copper faults are simpler and cheaper to trace

That third point decides more installations than any specification. An IP camera on fiber still needs power at the camera; on Cat6 it takes power and data from one cable.

Where fiber wins

  • Distance — hundreds of metres to kilometres
  • Interference — immune to it, which matters where trays run alongside power in factories and plant rooms
  • Between buildings — no electrical path, so no earth-potential problems
  • Bandwidth headroom — upgrading often means changing transceivers, not cable

That last point is why backbone links are worth building in fiber even when copper would reach. Replacing a riser is disruptive; replacing the optics at each end is an afternoon.

The usual answer: both

A typical multi-floor building:

  • Fiber between the main equipment room and each floor's IDF
  • Fiber between buildings on a campus
  • Copper from each floor's IDF to the outlets on that floor
  • Copper to every PoE device

The fiber terminates in an LIU in each rack, patch cords run from there to the switch, and copper radiates out from the same rack. Our racks and cable managers cover housing both.

What each needs at the ends

Copper needs jacks, faceplates, patch panels and cords of matching category — see our RJ45 and patch panel range. Everything must be the same category or the channel drops to the lowest one.

Fiber needs an LIU, pigtails, adapters and patch cords, plus transceivers in the switch. Mode and connector type must match at both ends — see our fiber optic and OFC range, and switches with SFP uplinks.

Deciding for your building

  1. Measure the longest actual cable route, not the floor plan distance
  2. Mark which endpoints need PoE — those are copper
  3. Mark runs between buildings or past heavy electrical plant — those are fiber
  4. Treat backbone risers as fiber unless the building is small
  5. Everything remaining is copper
