Patch cords are the cheapest line on a cabling quote and one of the most commonly under-ordered. They are also the line where buying one size for everything quietly costs you performance.
How many
Two per run. One at the rack, from the patch panel port to the switch. One at the outlet, from the wall socket to the device.
So a floor with 79 runs needs 158 cords, not 79. That doubling is the single most common miscount we see, and it stops installers on the day.
Add a small spare stock — five per cent, or a dozen, whichever is larger. Cords get damaged, borrowed and lost, and having none means a working outlet sitting idle.
What length, at the rack
Rack cords should be short. The patch panel and the switch are usually one or two rack units apart, so 0.5 m and 1 m cover almost everything, with a few 2 m for cross-rack runs.
The reason to be strict about this is not tidiness. Excess cord has to go somewhere, and it goes into a coil behind the rack. Coiled cord adds length to the channel, and the channel is limited to 100 metres including both cords. On a run already near 90 metres, two 3 m cords used where 1 m would do is what pushes it over.
Coils also trap heat in a dense rack, and make it materially harder to trace a link a year later.
What length, at the desk
Measure from the outlet to where the device actually sits, then add a little. In practice:
- 1 m — outlet at desk height, device on the desk
- 2 m — outlet at skirting level, device on the desk; the most common office length
- 3 m — outlet across a walkway or behind furniture
- 5 m — ceiling-mounted access points and displays, and worth keeping few
A reasonable default mix for an office is roughly 60 per cent 2 m, 25 per cent 1 m, 15 per cent 3 m, adjusted once you know where the outlets sit.
Match the category
A channel performs to its weakest component. Cat6 cable terminated into Cat6 jacks and patched with Cat5e cords is a Cat5e channel, and everything spent on the cable is wasted at the last metre.
If the installation is Cat6, the cords are Cat6. If it is Cat6A — usually because of 10 Gbps backbone or Wi-Fi 6E access points — the cords are Cat6A, and they are noticeably thicker, which changes how much fits in the cable manager.
Colour, while you are ordering
Colour costs nothing extra and pays for itself the first time someone troubleshoots the rack. A simple scheme: one colour for data, one for voice, one for cameras, one for uplinks. Write it on a label inside the rack door so the next person inherits the scheme rather than guessing it.
Stranded, always
Patch cords are stranded conductor — they flex, and solid conductor cracks when it does. Factory-moulded cords with boots are tested and protected at the plug, which is where a hand-crimped cord fails first. We cover the distinction in solid or stranded Cat6.
