LC or SC Connectors: Which Should Your Fiber Use?

Two connector types, one practical difference, and one rule that matters more than the choice itself — pick one and keep it the same at every point in the link.

LC and SC are the two connector types you will meet on almost every fiber job in Chennai. Both work. The choice matters less than the consistency, and the mistake that costs a day is mixing them without noticing.

The practical difference

SC is the older, larger connector with a square body and a push-pull latch. It is easy to handle, easy to clean, and forgiving of installers wearing gloves.

LC is roughly half the size with a small clip latch. Because it is smaller, twice as many fit across the same LIU face or the same switch faceplate. That density is why LC has become the default on new work.

Where each still wins

LC

  • Modern switch SFP ports — almost all of them are LC
  • High-density LIU where port count per rack unit matters
  • New builds, where you are choosing rather than matching

SC

  • Existing installations already terminated in SC — matching beats converting
  • Telecom and ISP hand-off points, where SC is still common
  • Sites where the people patching it are not fiber specialists; SC is harder to seat wrong

The rule that matters more than the choice

Keep it the same at every stage of one link. The chain is pigtail, adapter in the LIU face, patch cord, transceiver. A mismatch anywhere means either a hybrid cord — LC at one end, SC at the other — or a day lost waiting for the right part.

Hybrid cords exist and are legitimate. They are also the thing nobody remembers ordering until the installer is on site, so decide the connector at quoting time and write it on the BOQ.

Polish, while you are choosing

Connectors also differ in end-face polish, and this catches people out:

  • UPC — blue body, flat polish. The default for ethernet and data links
  • APC — green body, 8-degree angled polish. Used on ISP and video links to reduce back-reflection

UPC and APC do not mate correctly with each other. If a connector body is green, that is telling you something, and it needs to match at both ends.

Handling

A fiber connector is a polished glass face a few microns across. A fingerprint or a speck of dust on it is a fault.

  • Leave the dust caps on until the moment of connection
  • Clean with a proper fiber cleaner, not a cloth
  • Never look into a connected fiber
  • Respect the bend radius — a tight bend attenuates the signal and can crack the glass

We stock LC-LC and SC-SC cords and source pigtails, adapters and LIU enclosures to match. Send the LIU and the switch model and we will confirm connector, polish and mode together — fiber and OFC supply.

We supply the hardware discussed here across Chennai — Fiber Optic & OFC Supplier, Network Racks & Cable Managers, Cat6 Cable Supplier and RJ45 Connectors & Patch Panels.
