Gigabit Network Switches — What Changes at 1000 Mbps
Gigabit is the default for anything carrying file transfers, backups or NVR playback. Where it genuinely does not pay is a camera-only run: a 4MP stream sits far inside a fast-ethernet port, and the money is better spent on PoE budget than on link speed nobody uses.
What matters more than the headline speed is the switching capacity and the uplink. A 24-port gigabit switch with a single gigabit uplink will bottleneck the moment two floors talk to one server — that is what SFP uplinks and link aggregation exist to fix.

Sizing the PoE Budget — The Number Most Quotes Miss
Two figures are printed on every PoE switch and only one gets quoted. The per-port limit says what a single device can draw. The total budget says what every port can draw at once. A switch can meet the per-port rating and still run out of total budget the moment the ports fill.
The symptom is specific and worth recognising: cameras drop offline in the evening, come back in the morning, and no one can reproduce it during the day. That is infrared illumination raising every camera's draw at the same moment and pushing the switch past its budget.
For sixteen fixed 4MP cameras at 4 to 8 W each, budget around 128 W of draw, add roughly 10% for cable loss and 20% headroom, and look for a total PoE budget near 170 W. Our 16-port PoE+ unit carries 120 W and our 24-port carries 250 W — which is exactly why the camera count alone does not tell you which one to buy.

How to Choose the Right Network Switch
Taking these in order avoids the usual rework, where a switch arrives before anyone has counted the powered devices or measured the cable runs.
- Count the ports you need today, then add growth — a full switch has no room for the position you find next month
- Separate powered ports from data-only ports; only the powered ones consume budget
- Add up the PoE draw across every powered device, then add 20% headroom
- Decide whether you need VLANs — if CCTV and staff traffic share a network, you do
- Check switching capacity against ports × 2 Gbps
- Plan the uplink before the access ports: copper, SFP, or aggregated
- Measure the longest run — 90 m permanent link, 100 m channel, then fiber or a closer switch
- Match rack depth and airflow direction to the cabinet you actually have
- Confirm warranty terms and who supports it after handover
